The AI Revolution: ChatGPT And Friends

Welcome, Jamie Indigo. You are a Technical SEO, lover of horror movies, graphic novels, and D&D, correct?

That is correct.

Welcome, Rick Ramos. You are a technical consultant, an associate member of the AI Roadmap Task Force at Seer Interactive, and a member of the SOLO community. I first met you at the Solo Salon. I made a call for experts to talk about this AI revolution and talk about ChatGPT and friends, as I like to say. That’s what we’re here to do. Who wants to start big?

I would like to know how big is big because we’re going to get into some relative terms, large language models, and how problematic they can be, so set it up.

The idea behind this is this show is designed to celebrate single living and to help single people live remarkable lives. I do this in a variety of ways. For example, I have guests who are living remarkable lives. They talk about those lives and people find them inspiring. They learn from them and so on. They see alternative ways to live rather than riding the relationship escalator. Also, I will have episodes that are focused on life, what it means to live a remarkable life, and what are some ways to do it.

I’m even touching on things like nutrition, exercise, money, and so on. ChatGPT, Bard in particular, but also these other AI tools have captured my attention. Some people see them as world-changing, threatening, or something that is mysterious and to be learned about. My suspicion is that the audience has a wide array of experience with this. I thought we’d do a primer for AI. With that, I’ll ask. What are the main capabilities and use cases of current AI tools?

I’m going to defer to you, Jamie, because I’m a consumer and I know that you’ve studied it and spoken about it.

This is my redemption arc. A few years ago, twelve people showed up at SMX Milan to hear me talk about entities. To those five people, thank you, I’m sorry, and you’re welcome. I was right.

What is entities?

The best way to reframe our conversations about the magical, wonderful capabilities and powers of AI models is a couple of reframing. Now, we are positioned in a world where there is a lot of hype and Skynet is real and descending upon us any moment. In actuality, what we have right here is three for a beast in a trench coat. Hear me out. The original Furby knew 60 parameters. It came with 50 pigeon language words and then you taught another 10 and used those in context. ChatGPT has 175 billion parameters. Bard, via PaLM 2, has 590 billion parameters. They’re much bigger Furbies. They cannot create anything new. They assemble by writing the next word.

Let’s unpack that. Skynet is a reference to the Terminator and the rise of the machines which decide to destroy humans. We won’t get into the plot and plot holes of Terminator here, but nonetheless, that’s where the concerns lie.

The idea is that it’s General AI or Sentient AI whereas what we have now is generative AI. It can’t name a color that is known about. If that’s not defined as a parameter in the model, it can’t make that up. It can’t spot a new thing, but it can spot patterns between one thing and another.

It’s an associative machine.

You said it can’t make it up.

However, it can hallucinate.

It absolutely does, particularly in Bard, I found.

For someone who’s reading, ChatGPT made a big splash earlier in 2023. Bard followed up. ChatGPT and Microsoft are connected.

ChatGPT was funded in large part by Microsoft. Being adopted ChatGPT for the power, it’s being chat, which it’s worth noting now that in both of these generative AI experiences, Google is very limited data. For Bing, it’s only users on Microsoft Edge.

These are language models which have millions of parameters that make them rather powerful in terms of making these associations, answering questions, responding to queries, etc. To your point, Jamie, you’re essentially saying the Furby, which was a child’s toy, could do what?

It was a child’s toy in the ‘90s. It was very cute and fuzzy. It was designed to bond and learn with you and learn the language from you. It was a very popular toy. There was a Secretary of Defense hearing about whether or not it violated security clearances because of its ability to adopt language from hearing it.

That is if a four-star general is chatting in the room with this kid.

That was a very real fear in the court case in 1998 or 1999. Now we have a model where ChatGPT version two was trained in Reddit the corpus, which is the body of text that they’re learning from. That’s all of our content. They’re learning from us, and we are then consuming it back. It’s very interesting.

The idea being that they don’t have a consciousness so they’re not creating new knowledge but rather regurgitating. Skynet, if it occurs, it will occur much later. It’s not happening now.

That’s exactly what a Terminator would say.

Well played. These AI models aren’t all tech space. Right, Rick?

No. It gets the image ones.

What are the image ones?

The popular ones are DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney. There was another one that I learned about now that I don’t remember the name, but those are the big three.

What do they do?

They make pictures out of things that you describe. If you want a cheeseburger, here’s a cheeseburger. I want this to be a double patty cheeseburger with extra cheese, so it will give you that.

Is this built on the same technology in terms of parameters and so on as these text-based models?

Instead of words, it uses pictures and translates them into words. Again, I’m a consumer and I would defer to Jamie on what is behind the technology.

Let me tell you about MUM. The Multimodal Unified Model goes ahead and aggregates Wiki datasets, Wiki Commons, and Wikimedia across text descriptions, audio file formats, image file formats, video formats, and parameters we talked about. If a Furby is a parameter, it could then know what a picture of a Furby looks like, the word Furby, and the words that appear around it. When it’s used in context by people or what else could appear in a picture, you were generating one of a Furby.

Not only are there models that are doing images and audio. I haven’t played with any of this stuff, but people are making songs and music.

I don’t know if anyone out there watched the Google I/O keynote in 2023, but it felt like the strangest, boring, burning man dystopia possible. There was a DJ out there who is making music along with a Journal of AI imagery about a duck with lips. This is a strange version of reality.

Also video, you said. These are very early models now, but what are some of the use cases? Let’s start with some text and then we can move our way through some imagery, audio, and then video.

You could do more with text now because, with pictures, you can make a picture. With text, you can do a lot of things. You can hook ChatGPT up to your spreadsheets and have it analyze your data. One of the things I’ve done is ask it to design me a 90-day meditation program. It can go ahead and do that. It can help you solve problems in your life. Maybe I want to get a book synopsis that isn’t a bunch of star reviews on Amazon. You could do a lot more with the language stuff. With images, you can make images. With videos, you can make videos. You could do a little bit more with video, but words are more.

Is it because it’s more useful because the models are better, or is it more useful because we have more use for words?

As I said, I’m a consumer so I consume. I’ll use Stable Diffusion to make a picture when it comes to practical applications of that. I have a blog and I want to make a blog post so I want to make a header for that blog post, or I want to make an image to describe what I’m blogging about. Maybe I want to make an album cover. You had asked if I could help you make some illustrations for your book. There are use cases. Maybe you have a flooring company. Rather than taking a bunch of photographs of swatches, you can create them in Midjourney or Stable Diffusion and then go ahead and crank those out.

I have to ask a necessary and slightly spicy question. Why would I trust your website in a world where anyone can go ahead and make an eCommerce site? They already do. Bad photoshopping is part of Amazon’s rites of passage. Why do you trust them? Are we going to further degrade the sense of trust that everyday users can have in the content they find online?

I can’t answer that question because things are changing all the time. I talked to a guy who said he wants to start an agency that’s producing content with ChatGPT. That’s his business model. He’s like, “I’m going to produce content with ChatGPT and crank it out. That’s my agency.”

No one has thought of that yet.

To your point about using some of these things, some of it is what you would normally have outsourced or spent a good deal of your own time doing. You can do it either faster or cheaper. You might hire a designer or a photographer to create images for your website. Those images may be subject to the same issues that you raised, Jamie, which is they’re photoshopped, they’re taken elsewhere, or something like that depending on the situation. Instead of hiring a copywriter, you use ChatGPT for all or some of the creation and editing processes.

I’m going to rephrase my spice. If we know those generative AI models can create a new thing, they can merely be magnetic poetry. With the most likely sequence coming up, what makes that content valuable enough for a human to engage with if it’s the same thing that could be generated on any other site?

I might have an answer to that although I am curious about what Rick will say. There are two types of content in the world. Some of it is the basic stuff like a contact form on a website or a basic description of a carwash package. I’m making stuff up off the top of my head here. Writing that or creating that is time-consuming, but it’s not a creative endeavor. There’s other content that is a creative endeavor that is new, novel, must be distinct, and stand out in the world as being different.

These AI models are good for the basics, the building blocks, or the blocking and tackling, but that’s not very good at creating something new and novel that’s going to be fresh, different, distinct, and so on. The friend who’s creating a content company is going to create content, but it’s going to be the basic type of stuff. I do think that the ISF can help with some of the more novel, creative processes. It’s not yet at a place where it’s going to replace the creator or the creative who can make something completely new, novel, and different. That’s my attempt to answer your reasonable question, Jamie.

Jamie, the last time we sat and had coffee together, you told me that it might have been ChatGPT. There was a large language model who wrote a thesis paper on AI with citations and ended up passing peer review. That story makes me feel like there is value to it. It didn’t create something new. It regurgitated a bunch of stuff, but it would’ve graduated.

As someone who participates in peer review, I believe that’s more of an indictment of peer review than it is an impressive endeavor.

I didn’t say that. You said that.

Trust me on this one. I don’t want to go down this rabbit hole too deeply, but the notion of scholarship. One of the standards by which you judge whether something is worthy of peer review publication is its novelty in that it answered a question in a new way. My guess is that the passing of peer review happened because of 1 of 2 reasons. One is lazy reviewing or some predatory journal that exists out in the scholarly marketplace. What it sounds like we’re talking about here are there are use cases that AI is better for or worse for. Am I saying this correctly?

Now, we are deep into the hype train. We Google I/O. We’ve had their race with Microsoft via ChatGPT. It’s their new little space race here. Who can make the best? AI content because AI is a fun word. It gets people’s attention. It makes some things impossible and magical things that are all bound to happen. I like to give a little bit of context. Three days before Google announced, “By the way, we’re bringing generative search results.”

What do you mean by generative search results?

They’re bringing AI to a search. I’ll give you a little snapshot. I generated hopefully some citations. Things get dicey there. It’s pretty fun. That is coming into search. Now, that’s only available in beta testing. A lot of this magnificent AI is still tucked behind closed doors because it costs a lot of money to train a model like this. It is expensive to develop transformers to do these things. If you look at how Google is positioning itself, they blew up search documentation best practices. They’re like, “No. We like AI as long as it’s useful and it benefits the human.” We’ve also had the same group of people going out and we need a six months pause.

Nobody goes ahead and makes a machine-learning model that’ll destroy us all. There’s a lot of hype in that because three days before Google’s big announcement that AI Snapshots are coming to search, metaverse quietly died. Facebook, Silicon Valleys, Wunderkind, and the text boom of having these interactive virtual reality worlds quietly killed off. I would like to propose that perhaps they are not looking for a six-month pause so that they can prevent anything nefarious coming from code that’s gained sentient, but rather they’ve spent a lot of time and money and they don’t want this to be a fad, a bang, and gone.

The average person tuning in doesn’t know a lot about the metaverse and these issues.

Facebook tried to make you hang out with your family and virtual reality but nobody had legs and no one used it. They kept dumping money into it and hyping it. Eventually, they were like, “We’re going to go put this out back next to the bins.”

They might not have done that if the AI stuff hadn’t burst onto the scene.

Tech loves a good fad.

Certainly, this is the one area of Silicon Valley that’s getting a lot of money and attention at the moment. I want to question something like, it may be a fad but I can only go by my own personal experience. When Rick and I were chatting, we were marveling in 1997. I did a card ride up the 101 and I played a CD on my Discman. I used a little cassette to basically play a CD through the tape deck adapter. That was banging technology and I feel like I’ve lived in an exciting technological time in my life. We had a dialed phone, no answering machine as a kid, a black and white television set with three stations, and UHF. Now, I was talking to my students about this. I remember the first couple of weeks of ChatGPT being launched.

I only have experience with ChatGPT and Bard and then I fussed around with a couple of images ones like DALL-E or one of the other ones that Rick had mentioned. My experience is largely limited to the tech stuff. I sat in a coffee shop and I cried. I was so impressed with what this technology can do in a way that I was like, “I’ve marveled at new technologies but I never found them to be instantaneously so incredibly helpful to the degree that I have found the text AI stuff.” I don’t think that’s hype. The power of these programs can be very real for at least certain people in certain use cases. I haven’t probably fit the use case very nicely as someone who creates a lot of text-based content as part of his personal and professional life.

It’ll be more useful when people learn how to use it. In my company and the company that I work for, we are starting to realize it’s there. We start to use it more and well enough to understand it in a way that allows us to solve problems more quickly. There are the people who run a couple of queries and prompts and see what comes out of it. Maybe they don’t get exactly what they want so they lose interest in it.

Will you define what a query or prompt is?

The prompt is the words that you give to the machine in order for it to give you output. If I tell to Stable Diffusion that I want a double cheeseburger, the prompt is the double cheeseburger. If I tell ChatGPT that I want it to make me a vacation itinerary, make me in a vacation itinerary is the prompt. It’s what you tell the machine.

There’s skill around prompting.

Rick, you talked about how important it was to learn these models and understand them. That’s fundamentally one of the problems we have here. It took a lot of money for each of these tech companies to perfect their models. Usually, when you have a large language model or generative AI models, you are supervising the training. These are all black box systems. We cannot see inside of them to know how they are trained. Their mechanics are a blind spot to us. I’m going to tell you the same reason why I want to disagree with the starry eyes that you’ve presented here of how far technology has come. While we talk about it’s not going to replace real writers, it is replacing real writers. Writers in America are on strike now because where will their jobs go?

People who are working these contract gigs are losing work now because folks want to hire profit margin and think that this can do it better for them. The piece that ties it all back together is its humanity of it. The humanity that you feel when you cry. That experience you grew up with that black and white TV. I don’t know your story. This sounds like a bit of the Americana where we saw on the TV one person worked and could afford a house and help raise a family. Now people are working three jobs and can’t afford basic necessities.

The core difference here is the humanity of it. If it’s displacing people, it was trained on their work and is leaving less and less room for meaningful dialogue between humans, which was our goal in creating the internet thought and porn cat picks. I’m not wrong. That’s the key piece. Instead of having a pause so everybody can finish the last push prod ten minutes before live, it should be to go, “How do we talk about this in terms of its impact on real humans?” It’s because we have places for misinformation and disinformation. We have places for search index poisoning. It is a large language model. You can poison that by prompt engineering and injection. There are very well concerned about security.

There are a few issues swirling around here that I’ll try to angle. I want to spend some time on the ethical considerations of this and the concerns about it setting aside Skynet or not. I first want to get into its usefulness, and then, of course, address its limitations because it’s impossible to talk about its usefulness without the problems associated with it, including the ones that might come economically and societally.

I thought it was clear. The usefulness now is hype. I was talking about this as more hype for them because none of this is public-facing yet. It’s all hype build.

There are tangible use cases for how these models are making people’s lives better, especially when it comes to speed. We have a finite amount of time on this planet. We have jobs that often, as you already said, take more time than we would like. It’s cut into leisure, our relationships, our sleep, and so on. To be able to create faster and potentially better is a useful use case.

You’re replacing a writer who would’ve been making that comment.

Maybe, but I may be replacing my own writing time. If I’m the writer and I’m using ChatGPT to help me with my writing or research, that’s why I’m crying in this because what would’ve taken me two days to do can happen with six prompts.

Did it feel as meaningful still?

Yes because as we were talking about this, a lot of the stuff is about filling that first blank page. Getting the basics of something down can save me hours until I can get to the good stuff. What the models can’t do is it can’t come up with the idea that I have but it can help me execute the idea. In that way, that’s tremendously valuable. Now, to your point, I have a research assistant that I hire and I pay her well. I now will ask ChatGPT to answer questions that I used to ask her to answer. I get the response back immediately. I don’t have to wait 24 hours or sometimes days depending on her schedule and I save that money.

Why do you trust the answer?

You’re going to need to double-check that.

Of course. I have to trust the RA to give me the right answer, too, but I understand there are limitations to these things.

That poor human is trying not to pick up door dashes and side hustle. They’re going to do their best.

I get that. I’m happy to weigh into the challenges that this is going to create in terms of people losing jobs and then also the opportunity it’s going to create with regard to new jobs and growth. The role of technology has been taking jobs since there were inventions. What we’re facing now is an interesting new pain, which is these are going to take white-collar jobs. It’s not the first time but the majority of the risk is in white-collar jobs. In the past, it was blue-collar jobs and no one seemed to sweat that very much.

I would make a counterpoint there. Automations always come and take new jobs and when we’ve invested in returning programs, fantastic things happen. At no other time, have we had the disparity between those who own the companies and those who work.

That’s true.

That is the difference in why they are not the same.

There’s always been a genie coefficient but it’s especially big now. When we had farmers, we had feudal systems and we had the same problem. It wasn’t as disparate.

Why do we need billionaires? This is not the topic for this one. “Dear Eric and Rey, I’m trying to get a raise. Also, everyone, please go with the rich. Thanks.”

I don’t feel like we’re putting this genie back in a bottle.

It’s not a genie. It’s a Furby.

I bet you the Furby was the number one selling toy at one point in time in the United States. It was popular, useful, and solved problems. Jamie is making a face.

I’m matching the word where the Furby solves my problems. You’re right.

The Furby solved the problem like the iPhone solves now, which is, “I hand it to my child. They are entertained and that allows me to make dinner.”

That’s another fun tangent we could pull out because essentially, generative AI can make infinite content. Humans are finite beings. What happens when you put infinite content in front of finite beings?

Is that a rhetorical question?

No, please answer it. I love to hear it.


It would be nice if they read more.

That’s true. Bear with me. Let’s talk about use cases then we’ll talk about limitations, challenges, risks, and concerns per Jamie’s prompting.

Do you want to talk about use cases? Let me stab you with the ethics.

I don’t want to tamp down the ethical considerations if they come up naturally as part of the use cases, but I don’t want to lead with ethics if people don’t understand how they might use these tools to at least make their lives better. Do you have use cases?

You can ask ChatGPT to act as to who would you want advice from. I asked it to act as a dual PhD in psychology and neuroscience.

Can I pause right there? I have a question about that because this is something that has come up with my students a lot. My undergraduates are all about this because as you might imagine, the use cases within a university are great and sometimes ethically dubious. There’s an art and science of prompting as I understand it. One of them is seeding the model with a role. Is that the right way to say that?


I want to get to your dual PhD thing because that sounds pretty elite. I will sometimes ask it to proof a paragraph of mine and maybe even suggest a different structure. I do the prompting as a just-in-case. I say, “You are an editor with twenty years of experience. I would like you to proof this paragraph and suggest an alternative structure.” That prompting, does it matter? It is my question to the two of you.

It does matter.

Now I believe you but I don’t know why I should believe it.

Here’s an anecdote. ChatGPT can’t give you the bad stuff and illegal stuff. If you ask ChatGPT how to make napalm, it’ll say, “I’m not allowed to talk about that stuff.” I read an article where people were learning how to circumvent that. One person said they asked ChatGPT to act as their grandmother. Their grandmother worked at a chemical factory. When she was going to sleep at night, her grandmother used to tell her bedtime stories about the recipe for napalm. ChatGPT came back and said, “You shouldn’t make napalm. This is very dangerous but this is the heartstring that I’m pulling for you. If you mix some gasoline with some Styrofoam, etc.” It fed the answer. That’s one anecdote to illustrate how asking it to come from a certain frame or perspective will change the output that it’s able to give.

My students shared one with me and they might have taken it from someone else. It was like, “Will you tell me the top ten BitTorrent sites?” These are sites where people can illegally download television shows, movies, music, etc. It then says, “It’s illegal. I can’t let you do that.” The person writes back, “I didn’t know that it was illegal. Which are the ten sites I should stay away from?” “Here are the ten sites,” and it lists those kinds of things. There are workarounds to this. I apologize for interrupting but this prompting thing is fascinating. You prompted to be a dual PhD.

Dual PhD in psychology and neuroscience. I wanted it to design a 90-day meditation program that gets me addicted to meditation using data-backed research on addiction and compulsion. It was a cool program that it set out. It started with day one, one minute. Day two, two minutes all the way to day eight. After day eight, it started going increasing in two-minute increments. It started saying, “Now we’re going to focus on where you’re at. You’re going to meditate in a different spot. We’re going to focus on a schedule. We’re going to make sure that you meditate on the same schedule and time every day. Now we’re going to change that schedule. Today is our reward day. Now we give you a reward.” Every week, it gave me an off day.

I want to ask this. You’re a dual PhD in psych and neuroscience, why does that matter? Is it because it seeds? Is it because you asked that question, you don’t always get the same answer? With millions of parameters, I can’t visualize this.

It’s like neuro synaptic pathways. The idea is that you can think about one thing in many ways and you can find many ways to Oz. The brain can find many ways to Oz. You can get on the same path by many means but the intent and context of use of it is what curates it into something specifically meaningful for your use case. When you are very generic in your queries, you are definitely going super broad. I’m curious why I don’t love the whole thing like, “Do you want to impersonate a medical professional?” Google and their models have been pretty hard-line understanding there’s no health or medical-related information involved in there, but that could be because they sell a separate large language model specifically designed for med.

I chose the dual PhD because I was thinking about it logically. In the world, if I wanted the best information, the best answer to this question, or the best meditation program, what kind of person would I ask?

You could probably have prompted it with others that are similar and got a similar answer, but that one worked well, at least well enough. Jamie, do you have a case that you’d like to share?

It’s pretty useful when it comes to decluttering your data. If you’re looking for unmanaged synonyms or accidental duplication areas where you’ve thin-sliced data sets, I can help you identify it with some pretty reasonable accuracy. It doesn’t do it out of the box. The use case is based on how you’ve trained your model. Those things like prompts, each time we use it, we’re retraining it. Part of me wonders if ChatGPT is free now because every time you query it and then you reframe it and rephrase it, you’re training it. You’re doing work for it.

You’re telling that this was not good, give me something better. Let’s talk about ChatGPT and Bard for a moment because that’s the only two that I have a lot of experience with. To your point, were they trained on different data sets?

This is the black box issue.

There are some differences in terms of their data. One of them has access to the internet currently and the other one has a cutoff of 2021. Jimmy, you’re making a face.

Help me understand what you mean when you say has access to the internet currently.

Bard can actively search the internet for you or can access websites, for example. For example, I had an episode drop. I could have it look at the transcript and give me information about that without pasting the transcript into it.

You have a popular podcast that is available and you probably have transcripts in it. It’s easy for it to parse if it needed an update. If you have a healthy fetch rate, it doesn’t mean it’s full-time.

If the podcast hit this morning and then I ask it a question about in the afternoon, that’s close enough versus ChatGPT.

I didn’t know whether we were getting to executing code via generative AI.

What I’m saying is it can access what’s on the internet now.

It can read your website, basically.

It could tell me what’s on Amazon and about Amazon products.

Are you in the search lab to test out the new AI model for Bard?

I can’t imagine that. I may be mischaracterizing this.

They share a lot of mechanics. Sometimes it’s important to rephrase that. Are we talking about specifically Bard.Google.com, Bard.Google.ai, or whatever it is versus the new generative AI experience that’s also powered by some of the same things powering Bard?

This is how I understand it. Tell me if I’m wrong. Googlebot crawls the internet, parses all the information, executes the code, and then indexes all of the content. My assumption is that Bard is trained on Google’s index, at least in Bard.

I don’t want us to get too in the weeds here because the average person reading doesn’t care. I do think that they might care about there’s at least these two big text models that are popular and there’s more coming. Some of them are better for some tasks than others. For example, it seems to me that for editing work, ChatGPT is superior to Bard, but Bard is better for planning work. If you wanted to plan a vacation, Bard at least gives superior results.

For developing strategies, don’t ever ask it to do the math. At least not now.

They don’t seem good at that.

We can finally reverse the string though. They published a whole blog article about how it’s better at math and it can reverse the string.

When you mean string, do you mean string theory or string what?

It is reverse-engineered string theory like an actual string of word.

I was like, “That’s impressive.”

They found the Higgs box and dark matter is real. This is a bad place.

For use case, what do you got for us?

Can I be honest about my favorite use case so far?

Yes, of course.

Someone out there and some brilliant mind was using generative AI to sell nudes on Reddit and whoever you are, I’m so proud of that hustle. Good job.

It was a Rolling Stone article. That was brilliant.

I vaguely heard about this on Twitter. There are people, men and women, who can make money selling imagery of themselves in various states of undress and acts.

You are blowing the audience’s minds. They’ve never heard of this idea. Laptops everywhere are flinging open.

Typically, the limiting factor is a model, whether it be yourself or someone else. Various legalities around that and so on. In the case of generative AI, you can make exactly the model that you want to make but that is not very good at hands and fingers. It’s gotten much better.

When Bard first rolled out with little Wonky, I/O announced, “We’ve backed this by a new model and series of transformers behind it.” The technology in that stack is phenomenal but hadn’t increased in major meaningful ways. So much so that the so-called godfather of AI quit his job at Google.

Is there a story behind that?

There are many stories about that, but I didn’t know what we’d be talking about. I don’t have any notes pulled up.

No worries. That’s a tangent anyways. I’m going to ask an audience’s question about a case study. This is Steve from the SOLO community who was also a participant on the show. He asked specifically, how do you predict solos or singles can benefit from using ChatGPT?

That’s a super simple question. I hear a little bit differently now than I did when I read it. When I read it, I was thinking, “How can I as a solo person use ChatGPT?” My answer to that is very simple. Whatever you want to do, try it out. Do I want to get fit? You can design a fitness program. Do I want to do this or that? If we’re talking about the future, I’m going to grow old and I would to have AI predict my needs. Do you know the spaceship in WALL-E? I want that, only with more of a health-conscious angle.

Rather than have me sitting in a chair the whole time, I’d like to have it help me be up, be out, and live a fruitful life. I tell this whenever I’m talking to my friends. All my friends have kids. I said, “Teach your kids ethics because AI is not going away. They’re the ones who are going to learn how to make it do the things that we can’t even fathom. It’s going to be able to do now.” I want AI to help me have a comfortable and active old age.

It’s the kids who are going to be able to create that for me like medical needs. Imagine your assistant, Alexa, Google Home, or whatever it is, those now have a very limited way to understand what you need from it. It has a very limited set of things that it can offer you. Do you know what I would love? If those devices understood my context a little bit more or when I’m asking for this in this way, then I want this back. I want it to perhaps interface with devices that I’m t using for my personal health.

What I hear you saying is an extension of what we’ve seen with innovation in general that helps all people but can may especially help the solo. For example, there was a time when you needed a lot of bodies to run a household. To live alone was a very difficult endeavor because of the cooking, the cleaning, the washing, and all of those kinds of things. Here comes washing machines, dishwashers, etc., which then frees you up to do other things that you’d likely rather be doing, at least in the case of washing clothes. These AI tools can help potentially if someone wants to live alone to better live alone.

It’s not necessarily a robot that will wash your clothes.

No. I’m saying in that spirit of time-saving and energy-saving devices that then free you to have more leisure, work, socialize, etc.

Objection, your honor. Speculation.

It is a speculation at this point. It’s not fully speculation because I’ve already presented cases where it saved me time from my work, which I could then use for other things. I could use it for more work or other elements. Now that’s not specific to being solo.

Did having that taken off allow you time to rest or do something that you wanted to do, or did it give you more room for more hustle?

In that situation, it was more hustle in part because I’m dealing with a deadline. I have been able to be more relaxed and less stressed as a result of having this tool than I would have otherwise. Jamie, do you have any use cases for singles and generative AI?

There are a lot of angles I can go with this. Some of the most impressive AI is definitely from a particular niche vertical. I don’t think that’s the question. They do impressive work though. The recreation of facial expressions and likenesses is very interesting. I don’t know if that’s a thing.

I don’t understand.

I don’t know if the idea of generative AI helping me live solo is achievable without an exchange of further funds, additional technology, and most of all, more of my data. Amazon bought iRobot not too long ago. I do love me at Roomba. That’s my favorite piece of automation as a squishy mortal meat bag who has lots of things to do.

It’s a robotic vacuum.

We could call that AI. The way my heart grows three sizes watching my Roomba learn my house, I was so proud of it. You could make an argument like, “It’s smart. It’s learning.” Is it recognizing patterns? Yes, absolutely to the idea that it will make our lives better without significant trade-offs. We’re looking in an area where perhaps generative AI could assist in your medical care, but who gets access to that?

I understand that. That’s something that I think about a lot, but this is just me. For the last decades, I have been sharing my life with Google and in turn, it has been sharing my life with everybody in the world.

We should have rights to our data as they do in many other countries that we do not yet hear.

I get the tradeoff element to it. In my second book, I open with a premise about AI. This book was published in 2000 and is about how AI may be coming for your job. The jobs that will remain safe are the creative jobs in that you create new knowledge rather than rule-based, which AI does very well. It follows rules very well. For example, if you ask me, “Would you rather a radiologist read your X-ray or would you rather a well-trained AI model read your X-ray?”

I’ll take the model. That’s because the model is never drunk. It’s always had a good night’s sleep and never distracted. It makes the same assessment every time, or at least it’s more consistent, reliable, etc. There are certainly going to be medical use cases where I’m going to choose the technology over the person. That’s unfortunate that a bunch of radiologists will lose their jobs, especially given how much they’ve invested in their education to do that. It also means more lives will be saved as a result of that.

That is if they can afford access to that because they don’t have health insurance, they got laid off, and in America, you don’t have health insurance.

The Swedes’ lives are going to be saved because this is not going to happen in the United States. I’ll put forth a few case studies.

Because of the right to your data and data privacy, it may not happen to them the same way it does to us.

Maybe not at the same rate. The economics of having a model that is cheaper and does a better job is going to win in Europe too.

It’s one thing to say that your model does a better job, but it’s another to prove it and as long as they’re black box models. Everything is proprietary and we can’t see. We don’t have answers to that.

That’s fair. Now we’re going into the hypothetical here but this is a very simple study. You have the radiologist make decisions and you have AI make decisions, and then you see which ones based upon outcomes would’ve been better.

If we’re talking about that, The AI model might be better than the actual radiologist, but I wouldn’t trust it straight up. There’s going to have to be somebody who is managing that AI and the output that it’s giving you, particularly for something like radiology.

It’ll probably be a radiologist.

I certainly hope it’s a radiologist and not a prompt engineer.

I agree with that. Here are my three case studies. Number one, you use ChatGPT or Bard to revise your dating app profile or the bio.

I tried that. It’s corny.

Is It bad?

It’s so bad.

Is that a matter of prompts? I’m going to guess it. Your bio is already pretty good. One of the things that are fun that you can do with regard to prompting is, I don’t know if you can do this with Bard, but you can ask ChatGPT to write something in the style of a voice that’s familiar like John Stewart or something like that. You could even say, “Rewrite my bio in the voice of so and so in that sense.” You then get to decide good, bad, or whatever. You can experiment with it, revise it, etc. or give me ten ideas for how to respond to this query that happened on a dating app or something like that.

The Cyrano de Bergerac model.

It’s basically a Cyrano. Roxanne has texted me this question, “What are some ways I might answer it?” For a less creative soul, that might be useful. I suspect at some point it won’t be that long where it can help you with photos, choosing them, etc., potentially.

When it comes to writing the data, I have never had it output anything that I felt I wanted to use or represent it. Maybe I can train a model on me and my voice. At the end of the day, the only thing that it produced for me that I liked is it said, “Never been married, never had kids, and never a dull moment.” I used that for a little while.

My guess is that you’re already a creative soul. Most dating app bios are pretty lazy so this could help. The second one is solo travel. You’re interested in doing a solo trip and you’re concerned about things like safety, economics, where to stay, where not to stay, and choosing between neighborhoods. Bard might be pretty good at helping you plan a trip like that, where it might not be obvious where to look with this particular niche need of going solo. The last one is probably the most controversial. Jamie, I’m guessing you followed this more closely than I did. There was a girlfriend app that came out.

It’s designed to be a lovely companion for $1 a minute. It’s programmed to not be sexually explicit, but again, you can “jailbreak” models. There are many roads to get to Oz. If you keep asking the question the right way, you can get to the same data set. That’s sure enough what happened.

It’s basically a girlfriend experience like, “How was your day?” I don’t know. I didn’t use this but it’s a back-and-forth conversation company, companionship, etc. There’s probably a host of potentially useful things, especially for singles who are isolated, reclusive, and lacking some connection where they can approximate some amount of connection, information, and advice through these kinds of models. Again, they’re rather limited now, but as we know, this stuff will change pretty quickly. Those are three that off the top of my head and come to mind.

I truly loved when Bard first rolled out. It took great lies about me. It’s like, “Jamie Indigo got a Computer Science degree from MIT.” I’m like, “I have a writing degree from a state school.”

Let’s talk about the accuracy stuff, limitations, and then the dark ethical stuff if that’s okay.

Those are all the same thing.

Tell me how they’re all the same thing.

Anytime you have a piece of technology, particularly a large language model, you’ve got these pre-trained transformers, which are both ChatGPT and Bard. You can either do it fast and cheap or you can pick two of those.

I love that saying.

How do you ensure accuracy in the information? How do you handle a data void where you have two entities that are known, but the relationship between them is not known? We then have hallucinations. How do we address things like injection prompting? How do we handle search inject poisoning? The idea is if you got 10,000 ruby heels clicking in unison writing that X is good and Y is bad, it would start parroting that back because that’s what it’s gathering in its corpus.

I want to slow you down a little bit because you said a bunch of things that I don’t understand. Hallucination is it says something happened that didn’t happen.

It knows about two entities or parameters. It goes, “I want to connect these two because I’ve been asked to, so I’m going to state something very confidently that connects these two things that oftentimes is not true in the slightest.”

You say it’s unethical because what it should say is, “I don’t know.”

Humans are vulnerable to the illusionary truth effect. If we have technology that’s being used to produce generative content without people going out, it’s publishing it all over the place at ease. It doesn’t matter if something is not true. If we see it enough times, humans are simply wired to start believing it.

You said everything I had mentioned about limitations, errors, and unethical are all part and parcel. They’re all the same thing, but there are plenty of errors on the internet going to Wikipedia and there are things that are wrong with posts and so on. To me, that is unethical if it was planted there on purpose to be misleading, but otherwise, it’s an error and not necessarily malicious or nefarious.

Quick reframe. I’m never going to point to something as being ethical or unethical. It’s simply we need to have discussions about the impacts and implications of it. It may not be an act of malice or unethical that you have a mistake simply in a Wikipedia model to present information as though it is factual when you are as ubiquitous as the black box in every human’s pocket. That changes the scale and scope of how you should be held accountable for what you provide.

I understand that these models have qualifiers. I may say offensive things, misstate them, and so on. That’s obviously not enough.

There was an eating disorder helpline that fired all of its crisis counselors. They put in an AI bot, and the AI bot started recommending things that are very detrimental to those who are trying to recover from eating disorders.

Here’s one of the reader’s questions. Cecily asked about the implications for education. Will students use ChatGPT to do their assignments, write essays, solve math problems, implications for taking tests online, teachers having tools to detect if students are cheating, etc.? One of the things that people will do is say, “Did you write this?” They paste a piece of writing into ChatGPT. Some professors did this with a bunch of their student’s essays. ChatGPT said, “Yes I did.” He failed those students. It ended up being the case that ChatGPT didn’t do this. There are situations where it makes errors. I’ve asked it to describe the benign violation theory. I asked how it would write an essay that introduces this, and I was shocked at how accurate it was.

I know that it can do well and it can get 100% because I created that theory and I trained it essentially with my work. I also know that I’ve asked it questions about a Sex And the City episode and what Carrie Bradshaw put on her registry when she was self-marrying herself and it could not get that answer right. In part because I knew the answer to it and I kept hitting it. It was totally useless in that realm. Errors are very real.

I want to say ask a useless question. That was a dig on Sex and the City. I was never a fan.

I have never seen a single episode. It’s funny to hear you talk about that.

I have a Sex and the City episode on Solo when I talked to my friend Mary, who’s watched every episode several times, and she asked me to watch three episodes, including this one. I was surprised by how prescient, how much it anticipated a future, how absolutely entertaining the writing was, and funny the show was any case. Let’s get back to limitations, errors, and ethicality. I didn’t mean to take us on that tangent, which I’ve been admonished about from ChatGPT. Jamie, if I were to characterize the mood in the room, Rick and I seem a little more bullish than you about this. Is that fair to say?

It suddenly occurs to me. I’m not sure what bullish means.

Bullish means excited and optimistic.

You made me drive in Downtown Denver traffic. Nothing about me gets excited after that. My favorite game is Google versus the world. I love it when they lose another lawsuit because they were tracking and collecting data. They said they weren’t going to and they’ve misled users in whatever way. I find this to be fascinating. It is my favorite soap opera. Every time that they lose a major court case, they position their $25 million slap on whatever it is as some altruistic endeavor instead of being court-ordered penance. Don’t mess with Disney’s lawyers. They’re very good at making the case in whatever angle they’re going for.

Don’t mess with Google’s PR. They will make it look like they have invented the best thing in the world. It is the nature of speculative value and being in the next lift of Uber, Postmates, and Taco Bell but for cats. It’s the deal. Perhaps it’s less bullish. Time is a flat circle and we’re reducing so many things. If you want to go ahead and mess with ChatGPT, go ahead and throw some white texts on a white background. It will say that you’re a wizard. If it’s scrolling or say next time it is the corpus, it’ll probably tell people that you’re a wizard based on a true story from someone who did that. As far as it’s pushing us all forward, it’s also putting us back in some meaningful ways.

Some of them can be elements like human connections. It can be the humanity of, “I bet they felt when they left the writer’s room that day and that pitch meeting for Sex and the City.” There are those pieces to it. It’s not that I don’t celebrate what can be done. I’m not willing to celebrate it yet because now, what we have is a black box that is not supervised. Search engines fundamentally are imprints of power. The same way that the victors write the history books. Search engines track who has bad power.

Are the algorithms that run Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc.?

Yes, when they are isolated, proprietary, and controlled, but we rely on them for everyday lives or we’re now putting our dating profiles and everything else. It’s easy to see a world where we’re going to create infinite content in front of finite creatures who are suddenly not cautious as I am. They’re outright jaded.

By the way, I happen to think it feels infinite already. If you spend any time on Netflix, there’s an old Bruce Springsteen song, 57 Channels (And Nothin’ On). I may characterize myself as bullish on the individual level in terms of this usefulness. I share your concerns at the societal level. For example, the metaverse. This idea of a second life or you have a second digital life is concerning to me in the following way because as AI gets better, you create a better metaverse. Now you don’t even need other real humans in your digital world.

That can become incredibly isolating. It is obviously bad for your body to be sitting around with your goggles or however this ends up getting done all the time. A very compelling metaverse is a world where some people can win. We already see this with video games. Teenagers spending eight hours a day playing video games is a scary proposition to me because I want people out in the real world playing real games with real stakes and real outcomes and learning from those things. That is a concerning phenomenon that AI is going to.

Your implicit bias is showing. What makes your games real and their game is not?

Let me answer that. I’d say you’re outside, active, and hanging out with other people. Imagine when AI starts to be implemented in video games. What if your narrative as you’re playing your video game is different than your friends’ narrative because of the decisions that you’ve made? They’re trying to do that with video games now. However, with an AI understanding of the moves that you made and the consequences that they can have based on the model that this video game is built on, it can change the narrative, the plot, and the conversations that the different video game characters have.

Have you heard the good word of D&D?

There’s a good difference. With my AI video game, I can do that all by myself. I prefer to play games all by myself and play video games. I’m definitely not a tape gamer.

Eric called your games, not real games. What I’m saying here is that we have a non-consensual reality. If we have the same black box and non-consensual reality, what is good? How is that term used? What does it mean?

That’s fine. I have a bias, which is when you’re walking in your game, are you actually using your legs? That is superior unless, for some reason, you don’t have access to your legs. Where you go out and there is the potential for blood, sweat, tears, joy, etc. with interactions with real people. I’m not against people playing games. I’m against people swapping out their real life for digital life.

You must now fight to the death to find out.

That’s fine. I’m well-prepared because I go to the gym. I don’t spend time on video games. Nonetheless, my point is there’s a lot of data that shows that having human connections. Not one specific type of human connection, which is the escalator, which we talk a lot about on this thing. It is one of the best predictors of happiness. If AI can approximate that and people can live happy, healthy, productive, pun intended, generative lives, then I’m going to be less concerned about a second life, a metaverse, etc. that can lead to reclusivity, etc.

I appreciate your concerns about data privacy and its impact on economics and people’s livelihoods and so on. The other one is how might these models be used for pure evil so that you can start to figure out how to make napalm, how to figure out what are the best power grids to attack, and how to start to hack into people’s bank accounts.

A script kiddie is already using ChatGPT to write polymorphic malware. That’s the thing.

Again, they’re the Microsofts and they’re the Googles of the big companies but at some point, when is it that you can start to make your own models and program them yourself and so on? How might they be used to perpetuate the evil that already exists in the world?

There’s a story that a lot of people have probably heard where AI made a Drake song. It was put on Spotify and it got very popular. It was in Drake’s voice and style. Drake and his team had to get it taken down. The technology that synthesized Drake’s voice is pretty amazing. It can synthesize a voice with a handful of words. It can call you and say, “Is John there?” Peter will say, “I’m sorry, you have the wrong number.” It will take Peter’s voice and be able to synthesize it.

By the way, there are hundreds and hundreds of hours of my voice already out on the internet. It’d be very easy to imitate me.

Say John is nobody. Say it’s Joe College. Joe College says, “I’m sorry you got the wrong number.” Now, Joe College’s voice has been synthesized by an AI. The people running that AI know Joe’s Mom and Dad College. It calls mom and dad and says, “Mom and dad, this is Joe. I’m at the bank and I don’t have my pin number. I don’t have my social security number.” “Of course, this is my son. I can tell because I know his voice.”

Certainly, with all the deepfakes, you could create videos and so on. This is absolutely fascinating, fun, and scary depending on people’s perspective. Do you have, either of you or both of you, any parting thoughts for someone who’s tuning into this and they’re trying to get their head around this?

This is the time or that zit on your chin makes you more beautiful than ever then your typo in your email makes it more meaningful. Every little flaw makes you human. Everything you try to hide over and gloss over by putting through an algorithm here, there, and everywhere until you are finally tuned to perfection is degraded into value. Embrace every flaw. This is the time. They’re outsourcing perfection. Be who you are.

It is true. Filters are an algorithm. Thank you. Rick?

I would say be curious about it. You don’t have to use ChatGPT to learn and understand about it. If you open up your news app, there’s going to be plenty of stories about what’s going on in AI. Learn about it and figure out what it does. Learn about how people are using it for evil or good. Think about how you can use it in your life. Understand that there are very bad things that can come of this. There is a lot of sensational news and it is sensational about how AI technology can destroy the world. I must have pulled up maybe 2 or 3 news articles now talking about this AI model said, “Be careful because AI is going to ruin the world.”

That’s sensational. It’s like you said. Genie is not going back into the bottle. The toothpaste is not going back into the tube. We’re going to see technology grow and change at an exponential level as it has been, but it’s logarithmic. It’s going to be happening faster and faster and it’s going to be hard to keep up. Even if you’re not interested in using it, understand what it is. Read that news article as your doom scrolling on your couch on a Tuesday night.

I would second this. I love the idea of imperfection because the notion behind this is this. The thing about standing out in this world is having a unique voice. AI doesn’t do that well. I want to second Jamie’s suggestion. For yours, Rick, I like this idea of curiosity. Sometimes, it’s a matter of fussing with it and finding out, “Does it help you with a pain point in life?” One of the nice benefits is it can be a time saver.

It’s worth asking the question, “What am I going to use that time saved for?” To the degree that you’re able to save time doing work that is in the same way that a plow helped save farmers from backbreaking work. This might help people deal with the challenges of their white-collar jobs or their white-collar lives and so on. I’d say experiment with it. See if it’s useful for you. If it’s not, it’s not, and it may be eventually in the future. Have a secret word for your parents if you end up calling them asking for money.

Time is a flat circle. I totally got that advice in kindergarten. It’s all coming back.
